I have taken all the kind words on my images and reviews on here held them so close to my heart. See, what many of you may not know is that I almost gave up on this, at this exact time in 2016. After a year of a rough pregnancy and subsequent health issues, my business faded, and in this industry, if you don't stay IN, it's hard to stay busy. I was even more afraid of 2017 and what it would mean for my business.

BUT, some very special people believed in me and believed in my business... and I ended 2017 with one of my best years since I've been in business!! 2017 taught me a lot about myself. I made new clients (even made some new friends), and really pushed myself and my craft. 

I am SO thankful and my heart is so full. So thank you. Thank all of you for the likes, the follows, the comments and the referrals. My small business is growing and it's all owed to you.

Jessica got in touch with me with an urgent need for photos for holiday cards, naturally I replied, I can do that!!   Even with the delay due to weather, I was able to deliver images within a week.  Thankfully, she made my job super easy and her family was so sweet and fun to work with-- I enjoyed every minute! 

For this session, I ventured to Dundee and we spent time outside in their backyard... what an amazing fall backdrop, I might add!!  I really enjoy sessions in a place thats comfortable for my clients, especially with little kids!!  It's easier for all of us to be able to capture them in their normal "habitat" and everyone seems a bit more at ease... it allows for so many more candid and relaxed images!

HERE IS PART 3 OF THE SERIES

I wanted to spend this last part talking more about prints and labs and sizes-- all the details.  

This series has been about why you should print your photos.  I hope I have helped in persuading you to do just that and you're ready to order some of your images!  Now, when it comes time to order, sometimes clients are unsure on what size to print.  I have created a print size comparison to help make that a bit easier which you can see below.  

Also, here are my favorite sizes to print:

           WALL:  11x14

           TABLETOP: 8x10 and 5x7

Now, I was to take it one step further and say, print your photos WITH ME.  Here's why...

You work hard on coordinating outfits and looking your best.  Putting your best face forward.  I work hard on posing, lighting, and editing.  You pay me to give you great photographs!  There is no reason for all of that personal and monetary investment to go to waste when you decide to print images at a lab that doesn't print them correctly (or leave them on a hard drive if you still haven't printed your photos yet).  

This is why, as many of you know, I require print orders before I release digital downloads or send out a USB.  The requirement is small in comparison to the investment of the session, but I insist that all of my clients have at least a couple beautifully printed photographs.  I say that and some may wonder, why can't I print where I want to?!  

Let's set it up this way... say you have a car that needs a battery and has four flat tires.  So, you take it to a shop and get a new battery.  Then, to save money you decide to leave the flat tires.  Why?  Well, to save money and technically it runs, right?  It can go slow, right?  No, of course not.  You have to invest on every aspect to have a safe driving vehicle right?  Okay, maybe my analogies are kind of lame, but you get the idea.  If you are going to invest in a professional photography session, then you need to print your images beautifully.  No sense in leaving them on a hard drive or low-quality printing them.  You won't like them, I won't like them, no one will like them...don't sabotage your investment!  

I, just like you, want the photograph printed just as you prepared for and I created-- all the vibrant colors and all the details..  I don't want you to take the images and get a second rate print when you develop them at Walmart or Snapfish.  I know for a fact that they will come back off color, not as sharp and not nearly as high quality as my labs.  Not only that, but just as I stand behind every session and my images, I also stand behind every print and product I offer on my galleries-- if you are unhappy, let's make it right!  I can't do anything about the images you print somewhere else, and you often get what you pay for.  Also, the images you print as a lesser lab also represent ME, and MY work and business.  I cringe at the thought of horribly printed Walmart images being shown with my name attached.  

But don't worry, I have a solution... or a couple!  Here's a little bit of my personal experience with cheaper labs:  Snapfish prints a bit green or pink.  Shutterfly prints a bit washed out and yellow.  Sam's club prints very yellow and darker.  You get the idea...  First and foremost, I strongly encourage you to order from my gallery.  I offer credits and/or coupon codes with each gallery to help make this more affordable.  But, let's say your session was awhile ago, coupons were used or you just want to quickly print more... you can go to www.mpix.com and print!  They are a reputable consumer lab that will, at the very least, print better than most of the cheaper ones.  

Photographs capture the spirit of its subject.  Photographs preserve a memory.  Photographs can be handed down throughout generations.  Photographs serve as a token for a free ride back in time, and allow for sweet conversations with loved ones as they remember.  Photographs are the final product of your session, not something to skimp on.

HERE IS PART 2 OF THE SERIES

My mom and dad were married in the summer of 1985.  My mom had an absolutely stunning lace dress, one that would is most certainly back in style today. My dad wore white, and looked dapper from head to toe.  How do I know this, you ask?  I've seen beautiful and well preserved wedding photographs in wedding albums!!  

I'm so thankful for the images I have of their wedding day.  There's something so sweet about seeing your parents in love and happy on the day they married.  Before kids and life, and in my case, death.  These photographs have become incredible keepsakes, not only for me and my sister but for our children.  My oldest loved seeing grandma in her pretty white dress.  

I really loved showing my mom the photos I had and hearing about her day.  It was a special moment I will carry in my heart forever, and it most definitely wouldn't have happened had I not had those printed photographs.  

She told me about her day, about her aunts being silly, and even how my cousin captured some of the images.  Just thinking back to it now makes my heart all warm and fuzzy.  

My parents wedding photographer was Mike Schleyer.  He is their cousin and my second cousin (I think?)-- hooray for big family trees! Haha.  His images are incredible and I am in awe of his talent and so thankful for his work.  Can you imagine, in the age of film only- how much talent and technique it would have taken to capture in-focus, well exposed and composed images?!  Today, we can shoot, look, and reshoot if necessary.  We have cameras that tell us when the image needs focusing or adjustments for exposure.  Heck, you can even put your camera in auto mode (I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS) and capture decent images.  Film photographers are the real MVP's of the world of photography!   If you really want to dig deep into the photography world, I highly encourage you to venture into film photography.  The learning curve is a bit more difficult, but it gives you an incredible opportunity to really understand how a camera works, and how film is developed, and how prints are made.  I am so thankful for my time in college learning all of this-- it is invaluable!  

Speaking of his technique... did you know... he used a glass to capture the one image of my mom and the other of both my parents, with the white bokeh effect?!  My mom said he legit put a glass against his lens and captured the imaged through it.  So much creativity!!

We went to this super amazing park-- like, legit a dreamy place that ANY photographer would love!!  I don't even know the name, but it was like a mini town complete with a vintage gas station and even a train on tracks!!  We spent a couple of hours there, and to be honest, I think I could have spent all day there with my camera.  I hope to return there again some time soon!

Grace was a blast to hang out with, and as the session progressed, she really opened up in front of the camera.  She was truly a stunning and funny person to have in front of my camera and I enjoyed every second of it.  I'm glad she was up for any ideas on posing or going here there and everywhere in this park, and I have no doubt having a personality like that will get her far in life.  Congrats on being (almost) done with high school, Grace, and best wishes in your college years!  

Here are some of my favorite images from our session experience together.  

I had such a fun time throughout the day capturing Jason and Laura's day, alongside their family and friends.  I enjoyed hearing about their love story through the eyes of the Matron of Honor, the Best Man and the brides mother during their speeches! You can tell they are so very loved by many and their love for each other is beautiful and incredibly sweet.  I captured a few moments of them taking each other by the hand or whispering throughout the night and the sweet smiles as they were finally married.  Can you tell I'm a sucker for love?? 

The church was incredibly beautiful with great natural light and outdoor space for photos.  My absolute favorite part about it though was the choir loft!  That is hands down my favorite place to take photos during a wedding ceremony.  From there, I have a great view of the entire place and the altar.  Which proved to invaluable when it came time for the *epic kiss* and three people filled the aisle trying to get a photo.  I'm not sure my photo would have been any good had I been in the aisle waiting for it. 

For those of you attending a wedding here's a PSA-- I know your camera is so great and you just love photos and the important parts of a wedding, but really, sometimes you get in the way, so sit down and respect the photographer-- I'm sure the bride and groom will thank you!! I will thank you haha!

The reception was held at Crystal Gardens in Howell, and oh my gosh it was a beautiful place!  The rain continued to come and go all day, and so the elegance of the reception hall proved to be invaluable!!  When you first walk in, there is a stunning staircase and I just knew it would make a perfect spot for photos, especially with the large window on the side of it. 

While I would have loved more time with just the two of them for bridal portraits, the bride is always right and she expressed to me the necessity of being done with wedding duties and on to the dance floor by 8:45-- which we managed and I had a lot of fun playing around with my camera techniques while capturing the fun and dancing since it meant so much to her!

Anyway, enough gushing about love and pretty venues....Here are some of my favorite images of the day!

This couple was so fun to be around and I am so excited for their wedding next year at Frutig Farms - The Valley in Ann Arbor, MI next July!  

It's so great to be able to get some fun shots by the water and sand; I have always been envious of the photographers who shoot by the ocean and their endlessly romantic photos on the shoreline.  I don't think I give Michigan enough credit, considering we're surrounded by lakes and beaches!! 

I will definitely be planning some more sessions next year to take place around the great lakes... if anyone is interested ;-)

Missy was such an adorable dog, and I didn't realized how much of a personality dogs can have!  haha.  

I've never done a session like this, but I really had fun.  Afterwards, I created a couple fun "double exposure" type photos in photoshop just for fun.

We had fun yesterday creating beautiful portraits while she was dressed in her pretty dress from her great grandmother... some even included CAKE!  Don't worry Grandma, the cake came out fine in the wash!  I promise!  ;-)

Bear with me, this is a long post.  

AUGUST 20th.  Happy Birthday, Dad.

For me, birthdays of my family are always fun.  I spend hours planning their day.  I decorate with all the balloons and streamers and banners I can find, including the same hideous and shiny one with HAPPY BIRTHDAY in balloon rainbow letters that I use every birthday. I make breakfast.  I stuff the same, half burned, pastel colored candle I use year after year into that same breakfast (usually waffles or pancakes), and rush to wake them up singing Happy Birthday.  I video record my awful singing and their excited and confused looks as I wake them up.  Then I throw the breakfast aside and usher them, in all their bed-head glory, to the living room where they see the decorations and their gifts.  I spend hours planning their day and how to make them feel special.  Flowers or balloons and favorite candy for the girls.  Small gift and candy for my son.  I take coffee and my husbands favorite candy to his work.  I make them their favorite dinner.  I bake them a two layered cake and decorate it, every year.  Birthdays are special and they are special.  (and yes, I capture it all in photographs)

But, there's always one birthday that I just can't bring myself to enjoy.  August 20th, my dad's birthday. Today is always a tough day for me... granted it tends to be easier than the anniversary date of his death, but it doesn't feel like any other birthday I celebrate. Today, my dad would have been 61.  He was a Pilot Captain for Zantop / Kitty Hawk.  He was in the US Army, where he enjoyed paratrooping.  He was patient, confident, straight-forward, and compassionate.  He was outrageously tall and thin-- so much so that he used to duck when going through different rooms at home.  He loved to dance and make silly faces. He was my best friend; when I'd get off the bus after school, I'd often find him downstairs working on the biplane he was building.  He'd let me talk for hours about my life and was incredibly patient with me as I blabbered on about my worries and feelings as an eleven and twelve year old girl.  He had this incredible ability to bring calmness, confidence and happiness to any situation.

My dad was the king of duck tape, just as he was the king of making do with what he had.  During his memorial service, duck tape and that one time he tried to make our pool a heated one had the entire church (filled with hundreds of people) laughing.  Curious? Well, so we had an above ground pool that he installed when I was a kid, probably 9 or 10.  Apparently one summer day he thought it was too cold to swim comfortably in.  SO, he decided to run a tube of water from the pool filter, through the grill, and then back into the pool once it was heated.  I'm not really sure on the details, nor am I really sure if it worked, but our pool was still standing until the late 2000's so I know it didn't end too poorly.  

My father was strict with my sister and I, often having us do pushup and sit-ups as consequences for bad behavior.  We respected our elders and we were taught to Never Give Up.  He taught me to be observant, to stand up for whats right, and to always put family first.  He taught me that two lies (one to deny a mistake, and two being the lie to cover it up) is always worse than just telling the truth the first time.  He taught me so many things that have shaped my character still today, even though he's been gone longer than he was here at this point.  

One thing he did not teach me though, was how to live without him. My dad passed away in 1999 when I was only twelve years old.  It was a whirlwind week in February.  He went from having a stomach ache, to terminal lung cancer, to his passing in all of a weeks time.  It was the most devastating event of my entire life and losing someone so important in my life has left me with so much pain even to this day.  

There is a reason I am sharing all of this with you.  I want you to feel this with me and to see photographs as I do.  I want you to understand the importance, as someone who is on the other side of death and grief.  I want you to recognize how much these photographs bring me peace.  

Today, is the eighteenth birthday that I haven't been able to enjoy with him.  I don't have my father here, and this day is just another reminder of that.  It sucks.  The only thing tangible I have of my dad are his jean jacket, his favorite blanket (or remnants of it), and photographs.  They all bring me comfort on days like today, but its the photos that keep my heart from sinking into the dark sea of grief and despair.  These photographs are proof that the moments and memories are still here after all this time.  He is not, but these sweet moments from my birth to before his passing, they have given me so much hope and peace throughout life.   Year after year, and birthday after birthday, these photographs remain as my most prized possessions he ever left for me.  

I have so many photographs that my grandmother has given me over the years.  Some from when my dad was a child; I have all of his school photos!  I have photos of him in his Army uniform and from the early days of his young adult life.  I have photos of him and my mom before kids and then even more with two little blondes added into the mix.  

The photos of him before me, I love to look at and wonder about who he was then-- luckily my Aunt and my grandma have helped with a lot of that.  Was he into politics or fashion trends?  What was his favorite type of music?  Did he have a lot of friends and what did he do for fun?  These photographs have been conversation starters and lifeboats full of memories and laughter through this sometimes endless sea of grief.  

The photos of my family; my dad, my mom, my sister and I at our home in Dexter.  There are some that were captured before I can remember like of me as a baby and young tot.  Then there are those photos that have seemed to stop so many fun memories in time.  It's these that are my favorite because they are proof that my dad was just as amazing as I remember him to be.  Just as shooting a flare while lost at sea brings hope to those in a lifeboat waiting to be found, these photographs bring hope and peace throughout this sometimes tumultuous sea of grief.  

It is imperative for me to note that there is something so calming and connecting when you hold photographs that hold memories of your loved ones.  It's incredibly special to be able to sit in your grandmothers living room and flip through a huge stack of photographs she has given you.  So many times, photographs have brought me to tears or made me laugh.  Sometimes they have left me with questions or reminded me of how I was feeling in that moment.

Technology has gotten us so many great things in today's world, but it has also left us with a huge barrier in human interaction, and in family traditions.  Oftentimes these moments get stored on some hard drive, or posted on social media for people to see for a moment.  Social media may not be here forever, and hard drives crash.  You are doing yourself and your family a disservice in leaving these images in the digital world.

All of the photos both of my dad as a child, and myself as a child, I can now share them with my children.  I can show them who their grandpa was and show my youngest how she has her grandpas chin.  I can show them what it looked like when my dad grew up, and when I grew up. I can show them the memories and I can save them until I am ready to pass them down, just as my grandmother has done for me.  I can hang them in a frame or leave them in my grandmothers vintage frame and place it on a shelf for anyone who visits my home to see.  Can your hard drive do that?  

Photographs capture the spirit of its subject.  Photographs preserve a memory.  Photographs can be handed down throughout generations.  Photographs can bring your loved ones peace when that's all they have left of you.

Here is a sneak peek of her session! 

I absolutely LOVE sunset sessions; the light is so pretty and this particular location was so amazing with all of the trees.  The way the light speckled its way through the trees and left a golden glow to all of the images had me all sorts of excited!  

The next day I actually took my kids to the library and then stopped at Wilson Park before heading home.  SIDENOTE: Milan is a really small town!  You can pay your taxes, water bill, stop at the library and the park all within a few minutes and a couple steps haha.  Anyway, while letting the kids play and pushing the baby in the swing I noticed two BEAUTIFUL and large weeping willow trees!!  :::insert heart eyes emoji here::: and I would absolutely love to go back and photograph another sunset session there!  I am running my annual sunset session sale that I run every year, if anyone is interested!  $150 1 hour session in Milan or surrounding areas at sunset.  All images available for viewing on private gallery, free downloaded images and print release.

Here is a sneak peek of their session!!

We first started Downtown Milan over in Tolan Square, with a vintage mural as a backdrop as well as a variation of bricks!  It was really humid and sticky; I thought I had jinxed us for rain, but everyone still managed great smiles and no rain!! After capturing images for a bit outside, we moved into the back conference room at CoMilan; it was a large space with great lighting!  

Myself and my assistant, Shanna (view her website here), had a great time getting to know everyone and capturing everyone as they relaxed and had more fun in front of the camera.  Shanna and I have worked together a couple times now and even went to college together.  Whenever I need a second shooter, she's my go to lady!

With the 4th of July right around the corner, and my new CMPedu blog posts, I decided to make my first post about how to capture fireworks this coming weekend!!  It can be really stressful trying to photograph fireworks because its so dark and by the time your camera focuses correctly on the firework, its gone!  Here are a couple of tips to help you out!!

Tips on How to Capture Fireworks

• put your camera on a tripod!  If you don't have a tripod, you can use anything that is stationary (and safe to set your camera on!)
• if you have a remote, use it, or at the very least have the delay on to minimize movement
• shoot in RAW (you should always shoot in RAW, for best quality)
• choose a low ISO (100 or 200 max) , the higher you go, the more grain there will be
• do not use a flash, unless you want a little bit of light in the foreground, such as trees/objects to help frame your photo
• use your camera to focus in on the general area where the fireworks will be and choose a smaller f-stop (at least f11) to make it easier to focus *do not use auto focus
• adjust camera settings (in MANUAL MODE!) as the show goes on to get the desired effect (want trails of the fireworks-- lower shutter speed (1/2 second or slower), want stop action-- speed up shutter) 

Basic setting to start:

ISO 100 

SHUTTER SPEED 1/25 or even slower down to 1 second

APERTURE F11 up to F22

This image was created from a combination of old photographs my grandmother sent me, as well as a few photos I had taken in recent years.

Anyway, most of my clients know that I am a HUGE fan of airplanes, more specifically, World War II planes and the United States Navy Blue Angels.  The Blue Angels come to Yankee Air Museum every couple of years, it's called the Thunder Over Michigan.  I was going through my catalog and realized these images would be fun to share from their visit in August 2015.  They are also coming back this year 2017 and I HIGHLY recommend going to it if you can!!  My family and I will be there in September, along with my camera ready to capture my favorite aircraft in action!  I don't know if I'm allowed to do this, but here's a link to their site if you want to go-- NO, I receive nothing if you purchase -- I just love to share the experience!  

As for how my love developed, my father was a pilot and worked out of (now Yankee Air Museum) for both Kitty Hawk and Zantop.  He was a cargo pilot, and once I got to ride in the jump seat of his 747 to Newark, NJ on Take Your Daughter to Work Day.  I remember that day so vividly.. we spent alllll day (okay, okay, I was probably around 9 or 10, it FELT like all day haha) waiting for his beeper to go off so we could go on a flight!  I was certain the call wasn't going to come through as the day went on, but sure enough it did!!  I remember we hustled to the airport in his blue and white GMC truck, when we got there, him and his co-pilot filled my grape colored coat pockets with Jolly Ranchers and bought me some grape juice and Ritz Bits cracker sandwiches out of the vending machine.  I remember hobbling from the small airport to the plane, and struggling with those full pockets until sitting comfortably in the jump seat.  For those of you who don't know, the jump seat is typically a seat that flips down to accommodate certain individuals who wish to ride along on the flight in the cockpit but are not essential flight personnel.  As a young one, my feet didn't touch the ground and I remember struggling to get comfortable as they fell asleep just dangling haha.  After eating my crackers, candy and drinking my grape juice, I fell asleep for a bit-- so much excitement for a young one!! After awhile, I remember being woken up by my dad-- we were flying at night and could see comet Hale-Bopp!!  It was truly an amazing experience and I spent many years playing in airport hangars and inside cargo planes.  Through those connections at the airport and various experiences that really helped me fall so deeply in love with aviation.  It was through one of those connections that we got to meet the Blue Angels before their show, one extremely foggy morning at the airport.  I remember that first show and how amazing I thought it was.  It was that show, and all the other aviation exposure that has stuck with me so for many years and I enjoy their shows just as much as that one so many years ago!  

Okay, enough of my stroll down memory lane... here are some photos from the 2015 Thunder Over Michigan show!  

I have included a couple of the US Navy Blue Angels and some historical aircraft, including my absolute favorite-- the P-51 Mustang (you'll see that one in the shot of it with the F-100 Super Sabre).  The F-1oo is a supersonic jet fighter and it flew with the P-51 Mustang as part of their Heritage Flight Program honoring different eras in flight by flying together in formation at an air show.  That in itself was a part of history to capture!! I hope to add the maneuvers and aircraft in each photo at some point but for now, you just get the images.  

It was particularly hazy that day due to intense heat and humidity, so some of the images show that, especially as the show went on... all the more reason to capture more this September!  Hope to see you there!

To say that I am excited for their wedding in August is a HUGE understatement!  It's going to a blast and I'm so thrilled to see her wedding come together, as I heard a little bit of detail yesterday.  Some close-up shots of her beautiful and traditional ROSE GOLD (AHHHH!!!) solitaire will be fun!  Can you just feel the excitement?!  Haha.

Okay, okay... that's enough for now.... here is their sneak peek from their engagement session!

Cake smash sessions are still one of my most favorite sessions when it comes to kiddos.  I really enjoy their reactions to the cake-- both YUM! and EWW! prove to be equally entertaining.  To me, it also starts a transition from a squishy little baby to a curious toddler ready to take on the world.  Of course, any serious adventure through life should start with CAKE!

In my own way, I try to tie in some of these trendy elements while still keeping true to my photography style -- one that can capture baby, parents, and even the new nursery -- more of a capturing of an entire (true) lifestyle change that is brought by a sweet little newborn.  I hope these images convey that.  Enjoy!

This couple and even their entire family were a blast to photograph!!  You could feel the love and support for the couple throughout the venue and my wish for them is that it continues for many years.  The bride looked amazing and she was incredibly sweet.  I was excited to have captured some special moments with her children before the ceremony, and then some sweet shots of her and her groom in the park after the ceremony.  One of my favorite parts of the night was when the bridal party surrounded the couple, candles in hand, for a dance.  That photo made it into my favorites below.

I also LOVE that I did a session for Katie and Steve last fall, and this year for their gender reveal, we actually recreated some of the same images to add an extra special touch.  (one of the major advantages of working with the same photographer over the years!)
